Book Review: Mexico Can Choke On It – A Chaotic, Spicy Rom-Com You’ll Devour

by Melissa Ryun

One week in Mexico. One scorching connection. And one wildly inappropriate fantasy I really need to stop having.

Rating: 5 out of 5.

Every so often, a book comes along that reminds me why I love romantic comedies—and Mexico Can Choke On It is exactly that book.

From the start, it sets the stage for chaos in the best way possible. Petra, the so-called “reckless” sibling, is tasked with helping plan her brother’s wedding at a remote mansion in Mexico. The catch? The bride is her nemesis, and her brother’s best friend (and Petra’s first heartbreak) Bryce Sterling has been assigned as her “babysitter” to make sure she doesn’t derail things.

What follows is laugh-out-loud funny, bingeable, and just the right amount of spicy. Melissa Ryun layers in billionaire eccentricities (including a dog heir!), family bonds, friendship, heartbreak, and a romance that feels both fiery and genuine.

Petra Brinkman loved me with her whole damn heart. And I broke it. Twice.

I loved watching Petra’s character unfold—how Bryce learns to see her beyond the “chaos” label, and how she begins to see him beyond the wealth and charm. Their dynamic is messy, heartfelt, and addictive to read.

This book checks every rom-com box: forced proximity, enemies-to-lovers, second chance romance, and big family drama. But it also avoids being overly cheesy—it’s fast, fun, and brimming with personality.
